MDCU Highlights Regional Leadership in Medical Education and Welcomes Chinese Partner Institutions for Strategic Collaboration

Bangkok, 2–3 December 2025 — The Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University (MDCU) reinforced its role as a regional leader in medical education, digital innovation, and international partnership through two significant engagements held this week: an invited presentation at the 2025 South and Southeast Asia Medical Education and Service Alliance (SSSMESA) Conference, followed by an institutional visit from high-level delegations of Kunming Medical University (KMU) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTSM).

  • MDCU Shares Global Perspective at the 2025 SSMESA Conference

On 2 December 2025, Professor Naricha Chirakalwasan, MD, Associate Dean for International Affairs, represented MDCU as a distinguished speaker at the SSSMESA Conference held at the Conrad Bangkok under the theme: “Digital Intelligence Empowerment Shaping the Future Together – Building a New Paradigm of Regional Medical Education and Healthcare Cooperation.”

In her presentation, “International Collaboration in Medical Education and Healthcare: Global Experience and Perspectives from MDCU” Prof. Naricha highlighted:

  • MDCU’s historical foundation rooted in the vision of Thailand’s monarchs
  • Its comprehensive academic and clinical infrastructure, including 22 departments, 21 excellence centers, and 15 research units
  • Global partnerships with more than 100 medical and scientific institutions worldwide
  • Strong international mobility programs with over 260 inbound medical elective students and doctors annually
  • Innovative international initiatives including the CU Medi program, School of Global Health, and MDCU International Village
  • Ongoing advancement in campus internationalization and development of globally competent medical professionals

Her talk emphasized the shared mission within the region to leverage digital intelligence and international collaboration to shape the future of medical education and healthcare.

  • SSMESA Conference organizer from China Visit MDCU for Strengthened Collaboration

On 3 December 2025, MDCU welcomed delegations from two of China’s leading medical institutions—Kunming Medical University (KMU) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTSM)—for a half-day institutional visit and collaborative discussion.

MDCU’s leadership team led by the Faculty of Medicine’s Dean: Assoc. Prof. Jiruth Sriratanaban, MD, PhD hosted the visit, aims to further expand academic, clinical, and research cooperation. Delegations included senior leadership from both universities, notably:

 Kunming Medical University:

Prof. Xia Xueshan (President), Prof. Wang Jinde (Director of Academic Affairs), Prof. Nie Shengjie (Dean of the Graduate School), and directors from Human Resources and International Cooperation.

 Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine:

Prof. Fan Xianqun (Vice President & Chancellor of SJTSM), Prof. Bi Yufang (Vice Chancellor), and executives from Science & Technology, Graduate School, Academic Affairs, and International Affairs.

The delegation engaged in:

o Institutional introductions and academic presentations by MDCU’s Department of Microbiology and Department of Ophthalmology portraying their organizational structure, operations, and key projects/research initiatives.

o Visits to Microbiology Laboratory, the Department of Ophthalmology and also key facilities.

o Discussions on expanding collaborative opportunities in mobility, joint research, clinical training, and any other possible academic cooperation among three universities.

Advancing MDCU’s Global Vision

Together, these two events underscore MDCU’s growing impact on regional and global medical education. The Faculty continues to build strategic alliances, integrate digital innovation, enhance global academic mobility, and prepare future generations of medical professionals to excel in an interconnected world.
