MDCU and KCMH Expands Strategic Partnerships with Wenzhou Medical University Through MoU Signings and Innovation-Focused Study Visit in China

The Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University (MDCU) and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital (KCMH), Thai Red Cross Society conducted an official visit to Wenzhou Medical University (WMU), People’s Republic of China, from 18–21 January 2026, to strengthen collaboration in medical education, clinical practice, research, and healthcare innovation.

The visit was led by Assoc.Prof. Jiruth Sriratanaban, MD, MBA, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and Director of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society.

Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) Signings
As part of the official visit, the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University (MDCU) formalized the collaboration with Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) through the signing of two separate Memoranda of Understanding, marking significant milestones in institutional and academic cooperation.

The first MoU, signed on 19 January 2026, established an institutional-level partnership between the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University and The First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University.

The agreement was signed by Assoc. Prof. Jiruth Sriratanaban, MD, MBA, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and Prof. Zhang Chunwu, MD, PhD, President of The First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. This MoU provides a framework for collaboration in clinical services, hospital management, academic exchange, and joint research initiatives.

The second MoU, signed on 20 January 2026, formalized academic and research collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University and the School of Ophthalmology & Optometry (School of Biomedical Engineering), Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University.

The agreement was signed by Assoc. Prof. Jiruth Sriratanaban, MD, MBA, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and Prof. Hu Liang, MD, PhD, Vice Dean of the School of Ophthalmology & Optometry (School of Biomedical Engineering), Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University. This MoU focuses on cooperation in ophthalmology, optometry, biomedical engineering, joint research, academic exchange, and advanced clinical training.

Together, these MoUs reinforce MDCU’s commitment to expanding strategic international partnerships and advancing excellence in medical education, research, and innovation through multi-level collaboration with leading global institutions.

Inter-University Cooperation Meeting
As part of the official visit, MDCU and WMU held an Inter-University Cooperation Meeting on 19 January 2026 at The First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. The meeting featured institutional presentations, introductions to key clinical and research units, and in-depth discussions on future collaboration.

Key agenda items included presentations on WMU and MDCU, introductions to major departments such as wound repair, cardiology, nursing services, and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP), as well as cooperative exchange discussions that culminated in the MoU signing ceremony.

Visits to Innovation and Medical Excellence Centers
Beyond the formal meetings, the MDCU–KCMH delegation was invited to visit several leading medical and innovation centers in Wenzhou, reflecting China’s integrated approach to research, clinical care, and industry collaboration;

  • The First Affiliated Hospital of WMU, including IT system operation, operating theaters, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Coronary Care Unit (CCU), and wound repair center
  • China Gene Medicine Valley, a national hub for gene medicine research, biotechnology innovation, and translational medicine
  • China Eye Valley, an innovation ecosystem dedicated to eye and vision care, integrating research, clinical services, medical devices, and industry partnerships
  • The Affiliated Eye Hospital of WMU, a leading center for ophthalmology and optometry research and clinical care
  • Human Body Museum, showcasing advanced educational tools for medical learning and public engagement
  • Biomedical Research Building, a state-of-the-art shared research facility designed to enhance resource utilization and promote world-class collaborative research

Advancing Global Engagement
This official visit and MoU signing underscore MDCU’s commitment to expanding strategic international partnerships and fostering innovation-driven collaboration in medical education, research, and healthcare delivery. The partnership with Wenzhou Medical University is expected to advance joint initiatives in ophthalmology, biomedical engineering, advanced therapies, and capacity building for healthcare professionals.

The Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society continue to strengthen its global engagement to advance excellence in medicine and improve health outcomes at national, regional, and international levels.
